All-Terrain vs Mud-Terrain Tires (2026)

Most overland travel is driven on pavement, and an all-terrain tyre is quieter, grips better in the wet, wears more slowly, uses less fuel and is often rated for severe snow. A mud-terrain is better in deep mud and more resistant to sidewall damage on sharp rock, and worse at everything else. Unless mud is genuinely your terrain, the all-terrain is the better tyre for the trip as a whole.

Are mud terrains better in snow?

Usually not on packed snow or ice, which is what most winter roads are. Snow grip comes from many small biting edges and a compound that stays flexible when cold, which is what the severe snow rating tests for. Deep open lugs work in fresh deep snow and slush and are often worse everywhere else. Look for the mountain and snowflake symbol rather than the tread pattern.

Does tyre size affect anything besides looks?

A great deal. Larger tyres change effective gearing, speedometer accuracy, braking performance and load on the drivetrain, and may require modification to fit. They also add unsprung and rotating weight. If you are going up in size, look at whether the vehicle needs regearing, and confirm the load rating still suits your loaded weight.

How much fuel does an aggressive tyre cost?

Enough to notice on a long trip, from the combination of extra weight, higher rolling resistance and worse aerodynamics. The figure varies too much between vehicles to quote usefully, but it is one of the reasons people who tour long distances tend to end up on all-terrains.

What pressure should I run on the road?

Set it for the load you carry, not for an empty vehicle. A truck loaded with gear, water and a roof rack needs more pressure than the door placard assumes, and underinflation under load builds heat in the sidewall, which is the classic cause of a blowout.
