Privacy Policy

OverlandSetup.com is a set of static pages. There are no accounts, no logins and no database of readers. That is a deliberate design choice, and it makes this policy short and honest: there is very little to collect and correspondingly little to explain.

This page sets out what is collected, by whom, why, and how to get rid of it. It applies to overlandsetup.com and to every page on it.

What is collected

Three things, and only three.

An email address, if you type one in. Build guide pages, the builds hub and a few of the larger roundups offer to email you the complete component list for that build. If you use one, the form records your email address and a short note of which page captured it, so we can tell which builds people actually want. Nothing else is recorded: no name, no location, no purchase history. The form posts to Google Forms, which accumulates the responses into a spreadsheet.

A message, if you send one. The contact form posts to FormSubmit, which forwards the message to a single inbox as an email. Whatever you put in the message is what is collected. It is not added to any mailing list and it is not passed to a brand, even when the message is about a brand.

Anonymous usage statistics. Google Analytics records which pages are viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, what kind of device it used and how visitors move between pages. This is what tells us that the wiring guide is read far more than the rooftop tent roundup, which is how the site decides what to write next. It does not identify you, and no attempt is made to connect it to an email address.

What is not collected

• No accounts. There is nothing to sign up for and no password to lose.
• No payment information. Nothing is sold on this site, so no card details ever pass through it. Purchases happen entirely on the retailer's own site under their terms.
• No advertising networks or retargeting pixels. The site carries no display advertising and no remarketing tags, so you will not be followed around the internet by an image of a battery you looked at here.
• No social media tracking scripts. There are no embedded like buttons, share widgets or pixels reporting your visit to a social network.
• No fingerprinting or session recording. Nothing here records your mouse movements, replays your session or attempts to identify your device across sites.

Cookies and how they are used

Analytics cookies. Google Analytics sets cookies to count visits and to distinguish a returning visitor from a new one. They contain a random identifier, not anything about you.

Affiliate cookies. When you follow an affiliate link, the retailer sets a cookie on their own domain so a purchase can be attributed to the referral. That cookie is set by the retailer, is governed by the retailer's privacy policy, and typically lasts 24 hours in the case of the Amazon Associates program. Nothing on this site can read it.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings and every page here will continue to work exactly as before. Nothing on this site is gated behind a cookie, a form or a link. The affiliate disclosure explains the commercial side of those links in full.

Third parties, and what each one receives

Each of those receives only what it needs to do its own job, and each has its own privacy policy governing what it does with it. No third party on that list is given an email address for marketing purposes, and none of them is paid for data.

Emails, and what you can expect

If you ask for a build list, you get the build list. After that you may receive occasional messages when something genuinely relevant is published, which in practice means a new calculator, a significant correction to an electrical figure, or a substantially updated build. The frequency is low and it is not a daily newsletter.

Every message carries an unsubscribe link, including the first one, and unsubscribing removes the address rather than flagging it as inactive. Nobody is added to a list without typing their address into a form on this site, and a contact message never results in a subscription.

Your rights, and how to use them

You can ask what is held, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, and the answer will not be a portal to log into because there is no portal. Write through the contact page and say what you want. In practice the only thing that can be held about you is an email address and, if you sent one, a message, so removal is quick.

If you are covered by the GDPR, the UK GDPR or the CCPA, the substance of those rights is already how this site operates: nothing is sold, no profile is built, consent for the mailing list is explicit because you typed the address in, and deletion is honoured on request. Send the request from the address you want removed where possible, since that is the simplest way to confirm it is yours.

Security, changes and contact

The site is served over HTTPS, which encrypts the connection between your browser and the server. Because it holds no database, no accounts and no payment details, there is no store of personal information here to be breached. The information that does exist lives with the service providers named above under their own security arrangements.

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the change will be described on this page rather than slipped in silently, and the modified date at the top of the page will move.
