Why are metal hooks so dangerous on recovery gear?

Because a hook is a heavy metal object attached to a line under enormous tension. If the line parts, the recovery point pulls out, or the hook slips, that mass is accelerated toward whatever is in line with the rope, and there have been fatalities from exactly this. Soft shackles and rated bow shackles used correctly avoid adding unnecessary mass, and soft shackles in particular fall harmlessly if the line lets go.

What is a rated recovery point?

A point on the vehicle designed and specified by the manufacturer or an aftermarket maker to take recovery loads, usually bolted through a chassis rail with high grade fasteners. Tie down loops used to secure a vehicle in transit are not recovery points, and neither is a tow ball, a bumper, an axle, a control arm or a trailer hitch pin on its own. If you do not know what is rated on your vehicle, find out before you need it.

How long should a kinetic rope be?

Long enough to allow the recovery vehicle to move a short distance and load the rope progressively, which for most vehicle recoveries means around 20 to 30 feet for a light truck. Too short and the pull becomes a jolt. Too long and it becomes hard to manage. Match the working load to the gross weight of the stuck vehicle, and do not oversize it dramatically, since a rope that will not stretch under your loads does not work as a kinetic rope.

When should I not attempt a recovery at all?

When you cannot identify rated recovery points at both ends, when bystanders cannot be kept clear, when the stuck vehicle is at risk of rolling, or when the pull direction would bring it toward people. Digging, deflating tyres and building a ramp under the tyres are slower and considerably safer, and they solve more stucks than most people expect.
