Propane Stove vs Liquid Fuel Stove (2026)
A propane stove lights instantly, simmers well, needs no maintenance and is the right answer for almost all vehicle based cooking. A liquid fuel stove works in deep cold where propane pressure drops, and runs on fuel you can buy almost anywhere in the world, which matters on long international trips. For a weekend in a truck, buy propane and spend the difference on food.

Choose the Coleman Triton 2-Burner Propane Stove if…
You cook from a vehicle in ordinary conditions. Two burners means a pan and a kettle at once, ignition is instant, the flame adjusts smoothly enough to actually simmer, and there is nothing to service. For the overwhelming majority of trips this is simply the better tool.
Use it outdoors, in the open. Any fuel burning appliance produces carbon monoxide, and cooking inside a tent, a closed vehicle or an enclosed awning is how people are poisoned. Keep the stove on a stable level surface away from anything that can catch, check the hose and regulator for damage before each trip, and store cylinders upright, outside the living space, in ventilated storage.

Choose the Optimus Svea Brass White Gas Stove if…
You travel in deep cold, or somewhere the specific propane fittings you rely on are not sold. Liquid fuel stoves push fuel with a pump rather than depending on vapour pressure, so they work when a propane canister has gone limp, and white gas or its equivalents are available in most of the world.
They ask more of you in return. Priming a liquid fuel stove involves a brief flare that needs space and attention, the burner and jet need periodic cleaning, and fuel must be carried in a proper fuel bottle, never a drink bottle. Refuel only when the stove is cold, away from any flame, and outdoors.

Frequently asked questions
Why does propane struggle in the cold?
Propane works by vaporising from liquid inside the cylinder, and the pressure available depends on temperature. As it gets colder the pressure falls, and the flame weakens. True propane copes with cold far better than butane or a butane blend does, and blends are what many small canisters contain, which is why they fail first on a frosty morning.
Can I cook inside a vehicle or a tent?
It is not safe with any combustion stove. Cooking indoors produces carbon monoxide and a great deal of moisture, and enclosed spaces concentrate both. Tent and awning fires are the other hazard, since fabric ignites quickly and a stove tipping over inside a small space leaves nowhere to go. Cook outside, in the open, on a stable surface.
How should propane cylinders be stored and transported?
Upright, secured so they cannot roll, in ventilated space rather than a sealed compartment inside the living area, and away from heat. Check the hose and regulator for cracking and perishing, and replace them at the interval the manufacturer states. Never store a cylinder in a hot closed vehicle for long periods.
What about butane canister stoves?
They are cheap, light and convenient, and they perform worst of the three in the cold. They are also the type most often used in enclosed spaces because they look small and harmless, which is exactly the wrong intuition. The same ventilation rules apply to them as to anything else that burns fuel.
How we choose: we compare published manufacturer specifications, standards documents including ABYC E-11, and verified owner reviews. We do not test gear in person. Vehicle payload, roof load and charging limits vary by model and year, so confirm yours against the door jamb sticker and the owner's manual rather than any number published here.
