A soft shackle weighs a few ounces, so if something in the recovery chain fails it falls to the ground instead of flying. A steel bow shackle weighs a pound or more and becomes a projectile. That difference is the whole argument, and it is why soft shackles have largely replaced steel in vehicle recovery. Steel still has a place where a shackle must resist abrasion against a sharp edge or where a rated pin is required.

A soft shackle is easier to fit, threads through recovery points a steel pin will not enter, cannot rattle, cannot seize after a heavy pull, and above all has almost no mass. In a discipline where the main hazard is stored energy launching hardware, removing a pound of steel from each end of the line is a genuine safety improvement.
Inspect it before every use and retire it early. Synthetic fibre is damaged by abrasion, ultraviolet light, heat and some chemicals, and the damage is not always obvious. Use an abrasion sleeve wherever it crosses an edge, keep it out of the sun in storage, and replace it if the cover is furred, cut, glazed or discoloured.

The shackle has to bear against a sharp metal edge, or the recovery point is designed around a pin. Forged steel tolerates abrasion that would cut a synthetic shackle, and a properly rated bow shackle with the pin correctly fitted is a well understood piece of equipment.
If you use steel, use it correctly. Buy shackles with a marked working load limit from a known maker rather than unmarked ones, do the pin up fully and then back it off a quarter turn so it does not seize under load, and never replace a shackle pin with a bolt. Keep the mass in mind: everyone must stay out of the line of pull, and a damper over the line reduces the consequences if something parts.

Is a soft shackle really as strong as steel?
The rated ones are, and often stronger for their size, because modern high modulus synthetic fibre has an extremely high strength to weight ratio. What differs is the failure behaviour and the vulnerability: synthetic fails after abrasion or heat damage rather than after obvious deformation, so inspection matters more.
What do the strength numbers on recovery gear mean?
Read them carefully. Minimum breaking strength is the point at which a new item is expected to fail. Working load limit is a much lower figure with a safety factor applied, and it is the number to design around. Products advertised only with a large breaking strength figure and no working load limit are telling you the flattering number.
Can I use a soft shackle on a winch hook?
Generally yes, and many people do, but check for edges. Hooks and fairleads can have sharp corners that will cut synthetic fibre under load, so use an abrasion sleeve where the shackle passes over metal, and inspect afterwards. Some winch hooks are shaped in a way that pinches a soft shackle, in which case use the shackle at the other end of the line.
How often should recovery gear be replaced?
