Mounting is the part of a solar install that decides whether the roof leaks, whether the array survives a washboard road, and how much output the panels actually deliver. The electrical side of solar is arithmetic you can check. The mounting side is a sealing and structures job, and it is where the expensive mistakes live. Bolted brackets are the default and the most forgiving. A set of Renogy Solar Panel Mounting Z Brackets (2 sets) raises the panel off the roof, spreads the load across four points per panel, and can be removed and resealed if you change the layout. The cost is eight holes per panel, each of which is a potential leak and each of which needs doing properly.
Structural adhesive removes the holes entirely, which matters on a fibreglass high top, on a leased vehicle, and on anyone who intends to sell the van later. It is not a shortcut: surface preparation decides whether the bond holds for a decade or lets go on a highway, and the cure time is real. Bond through brackets or feet rather than bonding the panel face down, so the air gap survives.
Rack mounting is the least work if a rack is already fitted, and the most weight if it is not. Panels clamp to crossbars with no roof contact at all, the gap is generous, and the whole array can be unbolted in an afternoon. The catch is that a rack is often 40 to 80 lb before a panel goes on it, which is a serious bite out of the dynamic roof load.

Assume every hole you drill will find water and treat it accordingly. The technique that works is layered rather than clever.
Clean and degrease the area properly, then mark and drill undersize before opening to final size, so the drill does not skate across paint. Deburr the hole and touch in bare metal with primer, because an unprotected drilled edge on a steel roof will corrode from the inside out and you will never see it. Bed the bracket foot in sealant so the fastener passes through sealant rather than through air, fit a large washer or a backing plate on the inside to spread the load into the panel rather than a single point of sheet metal, and cap the fastener head with a self-levelling lap sealant.
Use a sealant rated for automotive exterior use and compatible with your paint. Silicone bathroom sealant is the wrong product on two counts: it does not bond reliably to automotive coatings, and nothing sticks to a surface it has touched, which makes any future repair much harder.
The cable entry gets its own treatment. Why does the air gap matter?
Solar cell efficiency falls as cell temperature rises, and a panel is rated at 25C cell temperature, which a vehicle roof in summer does not resemble. A panel bonded flat against hot painted steel conducts that heat straight into the cells and loses output. An inch of moving air underneath keeps the cells meaningfully cooler and the panel meaningfully more productive.
The gap does a second job. Water, grit and salt trapped under a panel frame is exactly the condition that starts corrosion on a steel roof, and it is invisible until the day you remove the array. A gap lets that wash through. Is tilting worth the hardware?
It depends entirely on your latitude and your season, and the difference between those two cases is large enough that a single answer is useless.

In summer the sun is high, a flat panel is not far off perpendicular to it for much of the day, and tilting buys single digits. In winter the sun is low, a flat panel sees it at a glancing angle, and tilting toward it can add a third or more to a short day. That is the case where tilt mounts earn their price, and it is also the case where you are most likely to be parked for a while rather than driving. The honest alternative to tilt hardware is a portable panel. How much weight can the roof actually take?
Two different limits apply and they are often confused. Dynamic roof load is what the roof may carry while the vehicle is moving, and it is usually a surprisingly small number, often 100 to 165 lb on a van and sometimes less on an SUV. Static roof load is what it may carry parked, which is much higher and is the figure a rooftop tent manufacturer quotes.

A 400W array with hardware lands near 60 lb, which fits most dynamic limits comfortably on its own and fits none of them once a rack, a rooftop tent and a spare wheel are added. Weight up high also raises the centre of gravity, which changes how the vehicle behaves in a crosswind and in an avoidance manoeuvre. That effect is not visible on any spec sheet and is one of the better arguments for mounting the battery low in the vehicle and keeping the roof for the light things.
How do I stop it shaking loose?
Vibration is the failure mode that actually happens on overland vehicles, and it shows up at the bracket rather than at the panel. Three habits prevent almost all of it.
Mount into structure rather than into unsupported sheet metal wherever the roof allows, and where it does not, spread the load with a backing plate large enough that the load goes into the panel of the roof and not into a single fastener hole. Use nyloc nuts or a thread-locking compound on every fastener, because a plain nut on a vibrating aluminium bracket will find its way loose within a season. Then inspect: after the first hard trip, then periodically. A loose bracket found early is a ten minute job, and a loose bracket found late is a panel departing at highway speed.
Support the cable too. Any loop of cable that can flap will eventually chafe through against a roof seam, and a chafed panel lead on a metal roof is a live short that no fuse on the battery side will protect against, because the current is coming from the panel. Cable ties every foot or so, with UV resistant ties on the roof, and loom where it crosses an edge.
What does a finished mounting job look like?
Panels sitting on brackets with a visible air gap, no shading from the fan cowl or roof rails at any time of day, fasteners into structure or spread across backing plates, every penetration bedded and capped, a gland box with the cable dropping away from it rather than into it, and cable supported and loomed the whole way to the controller. Nothing on the roof that can flap, nothing that can catch a branch, and no connector left unmated.
