DC to DC Charger vs Battery Isolator (2026)

An isolator simply connects the house battery to the alternator when the voltage rises, which works with lead acid and does not work well with lithium or with modern variable voltage alternators. A DC to DC charger takes whatever the alternator gives and produces a correct multi stage charge for the chemistry you have. If your house battery is lithium, or your vehicle has a smart alternator, the charger is not optional.

What is a smart alternator?

One whose voltage is controlled by the vehicle's engine management to improve fuel economy, often dropping to a low voltage once the starter battery is topped up and raising it during deceleration.
