The single most repeated hard-won lesson has nothing to do with brand: charging lithium below freezing causes permanent plating damage, and it is silent. Not below freezing, unless the battery is self-heating or your charger enforces a low-temperature cut-off. Charging below freezing causes permanent lithium plating and it does not announce itself. Discharging in the cold is fine; charging is not.
Lithium or AGM for a van?
Lithium gives roughly twice the usable capacity per pound, tolerates deep discharge and lasts far longer, at a much higher purchase price and with the cold-charging caveat. For most builds that keep the vehicle several years, lithium is cheaper over time.
Do I need a DC-DC charger?
On any modern vehicle, effectively yes. A smart alternator varies its voltage and a simple isolator will not charge lithium properly or safely. A DC-DC charger presents the correct profile and protects the alternator from the battery's enormous appetite for current.
How do I fuse a 320Ah lithium battery?
At the battery terminal, with a fuse or breaker rated to protect the cable rather than the load, sized for the cable you have used. Get the cable gauge right first from the current and run length, then fuse to the cable.
What does Bluetooth monitoring actually give me?
State of charge, voltage and current without adding a shunt and a display. It is genuinely useful and it is not a substitute for a proper system monitor if you have multiple sources and loads.
