Storage and AC power are two thirds of the difference. That is the honest summary of this tier: you are buying the ability to stay put for a week and the ability to plug into a pedestal, and almost nothing else changes about how the system behaves day to day.

How do you wire a 3000VA inverter safely at 12V?

Start from the current, not the wattage. DC amps equal AC watts divided by system voltage times efficiency, so 3000 / (12 x 0.92) = 272A. That is the design current, and it is roughly three times what a 1000W inverter asks for.

Under ABYC E-11 ampacity for 105C copper outside an engine space, 2/0 AWG carries 330A and 1/0 carries 285A, so 2/0 is the correct trunk with margin. Voltage drop then decides the length: at 272A through 2/0, whose resistance is 0.0000779 ohms per foot, a 3 foot one-way run drops 2 x 3 x 272 x 0.0000779 = 0.127V, comfortably inside the 0.36V that 3 percent allows at 12V. Double the run to 6 feet and you are at 0.254V, still acceptable but with far less margin, which is why the inverter goes next to the bank rather than across the vehicle from it.

The fuse protects that cable, so it sits at or below 330A and within a few inches of the battery positive. Check every figure against the ampacity chart, the voltage drop chart and your own lengths in the wire gauge calculator. Inside an engine space every one of those ampacity figures derates by roughly 30 percent.

What you can skip

Less than you would think, because this build has already had the optional items removed. Three lines are genuinely discretionary and cutting all three saves about $1,580.

  • Half the battery bank. Dropping to a single 200Ah battery saves $810 and leaves you with about 170Ah usable, which is still double the intermediate build. This is the right cut if you rarely park for more than three days.
  • The auxiliary light pods . A driving aid, not a living-system component. Nothing about the power system needs them.
  • The 75 litre dual zone fridge . Stepping down to the 45 litre unit saves $584 and roughly 25 lb, and costs you a real freezer. In a two person build that is often the right trade.

What you cannot skip, at any price: the per-battery terminal fuses , the main distribution fusing , the busbars , the battery restraint and the hydraulic crimper . On a bank this size those are not tidiness items, they are the difference between a system and a hazard.

What to add after this, if anything

Very little, and that is the point of a ceiling build. The two genuine additions are a second roof fan so air moves through rather than around the space, and a larger DC-DC charger if you drive a lot: 50A into a 400Ah bank is a trickle by proportion, and a second charger in parallel or a higher current unit turns a long drive into a full bank. Air conditioning is the one thing this build still cannot sustain overnight, and solving that properly means moving to a 24V system rather than adding to this one.

Do I need 800W of solar, or is that overkill?

It is the right size for a 400Ah bank and it is not overkill. Eight hundred watts at five peak sun hours with MPPT returns roughly 3,000 watt-hours, or about 234 amp-hours, which is a little under 70 percent of the bank in one good day. That ratio is what lets you park for a week without moving the vehicle. Solar is also the cheapest energy in the system per watt-hour delivered, well below the cost of adding another battery.

Why an inverter charger instead of a separate inverter?

Because it replaces three components with one. A MultiPlus-II is an inverter, a shore power battery charger and an automatic transfer switch in a single case, so plugging into a campsite pedestal charges the bank and powers the outlets with no switching on your part. The catch is current: at 12V a 3000VA unit pulls well over 250A at full load, so the cable and fusing between it and the bank have to be sized for that and not for the average draw.

Can I build this myself, or do I need an installer?

The mechanical work and the low current circuits are within reach of a careful DIY builder. The high current side is where the risk sits: a 400Ah lithium bank can deliver several thousand amps into a short, and a bad 2/0 crimp carrying 250A is a heating element bolted to a battery.
