This is the build most people should have gone straight to. It comes to roughly $2,786 and it is genuinely different from the beginner build rather than being the same list at a higher price. The difference is one component: the Renogy Smart 50A DC-DC MPPT Battery Charger 12V (Dual Input) , which turns every hour of driving into about 600W of charging instead of the 100 to 200W a power station accepts from a 12V socket.
Everything else follows from that. Once the alternator can refill the bank properly, a wired battery makes more sense than a sealed station, and once you have a wired battery you need the fusing, the busbars and the cable that a station had hidden inside its case. That is the whole shape of this tier: not more capacity, but a charging path fast enough that capacity stops being the thing you worry about.

Note the storage row. The battery is actually cheaper than the power station it replaces, which surprises people. What you pay for instead is everything the station had built in: the fusing, the busbars, the inverter, the controller and the cable. That is a fair trade only because the wired versions of those parts are better than the ones inside a sealed box, and because you can replace any one of them without replacing the battery.
How do you size the cable and the fuses for this build?
Two separate questions, always answered in this order. Ampacity asks whether the conductor can carry the current without overheating. Voltage drop asks whether enough voltage survives the run to be useful. On a short high-current run ampacity usually governs; on a long low-current run voltage drop usually governs, and the wire ends up larger than the ampacity table alone would suggest.
Voltage drop is 2 x L x I x R, where L is the one-way run length in feet, I is current in amps and R is the conductor resistance in ohms per foot. The factor of two is there because current travels out and back, and forgetting it is the most common sizing error in DIY builds. On a 12V system the 3 percent target is 0.36V.

Note the starter-battery-to-charger row: the same 50A as the short run beside it, but 15 feet away instead of 4, which is why it steps up two gauges. What you can skip
Two lines here are genuinely optional, and cutting both takes about $58 off the total without changing what the system can do.
- The clamp meter . The shunt monitor already tells you net current, so the clamp meter is for diagnosis rather than operation. Buy it the first time something does not add up.
- The USB-C socket . Skippable because the inverter can charge a laptop, at the cost of about 15 percent of the energy each time. It pays for itself over a long trip and not over a weekend.
What you absolutely cannot skip: the terminal fuse , the busbars , the battery switch , the battery tray and the crimper . Together they cost about $141, which is less than the roof fan, and every one of them is there to stop a short becoming a fire or a battery becoming a projectile. There is no version of this build that is safe without them.
What to upgrade first from here
A second battery, not a bigger inverter. Capacity is what runs out when you stop moving, and a parallel 100Ah pack doubles your margin for roughly $300. Only once the bank can supply the current does a 2000W inverter make sense, because at full output it pulls about 185A and a single 100Ah battery should not be asked for that for long.
After that, the expert build is mostly about two things you cannot retrofit cheaply: a 400Ah bank and an inverter-charger that also handles shore power. Is a 100Ah lithium battery enough for a van?
For two people with a fridge, lights, a fan and laptops, yes, provided the charging keeps up. One hundred amp-hours of LiFePO4 is 80 to 90Ah usable against a typical draw of 55 to 70Ah a day, so it is a day and a half of coasting. What makes it work is the 50A DC-DC charger putting most of that back in two hours of driving. If you park for four days at a time, buy the second battery instead of a bigger inverter.
Do I need a DC-DC charger or can I just connect to the alternator?
You need the charger. A lithium battery wired directly to an alternator will pull as much current as it can take, which can cook an alternator not rated for it, and a modern smart alternator varies its voltage in ways that will never fully charge a LiFePO4 pack. A DC-DC charger limits current, applies the correct lithium charge profile and isolates the house bank from the starter battery so a flat house bank cannot strand you.
What size fuse goes at the battery?
Size the fuse to the cable, never to the load. The main fuse protects the conductor from the battery to the first distribution point, so it must be at or below that cable ampacity: 4 AWG carries 160A under ABYC ratings outside an engine space, so a 150A MRBF or ANL fuse is correct on a 4 AWG trunk. It goes within a few inches of the positive post, because the length of unprotected cable before the fuse is the part that can burn.
How much solar does a 100Ah battery need?
Between 200W and 400W, and 400W is the better answer if the roof has space. Four hundred watts at five peak sun hours with an MPPT controller returns roughly 1,500Wh, which is about 117 amp-hours at 12.8V, comfortably more than a typical 55 to 70Ah daily draw. Oversizing the array is how you keep the fridge running through three cloudy days, and panels are the cheapest part of the system per watt-hour delivered.
What should I upgrade first from this build?
A second battery, then a bigger inverter, in that order. Capacity is what runs out on a long stationary stay, and a second 100Ah pack in parallel is the cheapest way to double your margin. A 2000W inverter only becomes worth fitting once the bank can supply the 185A it pulls at full output, which a single 100Ah battery cannot do comfortably for long.
Electrical safety: 12V is low voltage but not low energy. A lithium house battery can push several hundred amps into a short circuit, and undersized or unfused cable is one of the most common causes of vehicle fires in DIY builds. Every circuit must be fused at the source of power, within a few inches of the battery terminal, at or below the ampacity of the smallest conductor it protects. Size cable for voltage drop as well as ampacity, torque terminals to specification, and have a lithium installation inspected by a qualified installer before it carries load.
